About and experience

Oscar Freeman

I've spent 4+ years writing software for a living: weighing software in PowerBuilder and SQL as an apprentice, then PHP, JavaScript and MariaDB on a custom MVC framework, where I build APIs, integrations and database-driven features for live, business-critical sites. In my own projects I work in Laravel, Rust, TypeScript, React and Svelte. I'm happiest on the backend, designing the data, the services and the edges between them, and comfortable carrying a feature through to the front end.

May 2024 to present Studley ยท Hybrid

Junior PHP Developer, CVP

  • Integrated BidJS Auctions into the CVP customer site, which is still running today because of strong demand
  • Built an article tool for the team to upload, edit and maintain articles, which have generated thousands of views
  • Built a message manager with AI integration in a backend tool to improve response times
  • Rewrote the trade-in process for the admin teams with AI-assisted tools, greatly speeding up turnaround
  • Helped migrate the front end from UIkit to Tailwind, modernising the development process and speeding up page loads
  • Weekly maintenance of cron jobs

April 2022 to May 2024 Stratford-upon-Avon

Apprentice, then Software Developer, Infotech Solutions

  • Built a web calendar in PHP and JavaScript that automated daily reviews, saving a client time on manual paper reviews
  • Gathered requirements and delivered software upgrades for multiple clients
  • Handled database upgrade migrations for customers to improve security and day-to-day efficiency
  • Carried out site visits to set up new installations and IT integration (printers, networks and weighbridge connections)
  • Ran the customer support system, at times on my own when staff were short
  • Completed the apprenticeship with a Distinction and an offer of full-time employment

2022 to 2023

Software Development Technician Apprenticeship

Infotech Solutions. Grade: Distinction.

How I work

I build with AI-assisted tools such as Claude Code, and treat them as a fast pair programmer rather than an autopilot. I designed the structure of Orbis Scriptor myself, its Rust layers and typed bindings to the front end, and used Claude Code for the repetitive scaffolding and tests, with every change held to Clippy and the test suite. AI makes the routine parts quicker; I review what it writes and keep the design decisions and trade-offs for myself.

Freelance

Alongside looking for a role, I take on the right freelance project.

  • Website design and build

A complete site built from scratch for your business, designed around what you actually need to say, then coded by hand so it stays fast and easy to change.

    • Design and build, mobile first
    • Copywriting support and content structure
    • Contact forms wired up to your inbox
    • Handover, hosting setup and a walkthrough
  • Local SEO

Getting found by people searching for what you do near where you do it, with the technical groundwork that search engines actually read.

    • One strong page per genuine service and place, never near-duplicate town pages
    • Structured data so listings render properly
    • Google Business Profile setup and cleanup
    • A plain-English report on what changed and why
  • Performance and accessibility

Making an existing site faster and usable by everyone, often the cheapest improvement available to a site that already works.

    • Page speed audit with prioritised fixes
    • Image, font and asset optimisation
    • Keyboard and screen reader pass
    • Colour contrast and heading structure fixes
  • Ongoing support

Small changes, updates and fixes handled as they come up, without a retainer you have to grow into.

    • Content and copy changes
    • Framework and dependency updates
    • Uptime and broken link monitoring
    • Direct contact, no ticket queue
